10 Steps to Successful Selling on eBay

Is it time to start your own business? is it time to begin your own work from home business? Whether your goal is to make some additional money for house hold expenses, or finally beginning your work from home career, or were like me and had no other source of incom and had to make a move to start earning an income. Ebay is the worlds largest marketplace and provides anybody the opportunity to begin and have a successful career. If this is you and you want to be a successful seller with your own eBay business, then here’s a simple, ten-step path to eBay enlightenment. A 10 step process, which if done right will vault you into a staedy income stream.

Step 1: Identify your market. Know who your target market will be. Know what the target market is shopping for, and how they may be shopping for the product you want to offer. know their buying and spending habits. If your target market are teenagers, then know what a teenager is looking for today. Take a while to sit and watch for what sells and what doesn’t out of the items you’re interested in. Do your homework. Invest the time to become an expert in the field you want to target. Any market research data you can collect will be very useful to you later on. You’ll probably see the ‘sweet spots’ quite quickly – those one or two items that always seem to sell for a good price. You do not need a hundred items, just a simple 3 or 4 items is enough to get your work at home business off the ground and earning money.

Step 2: Watch the competition. Follow the leads of the succesful sellers on Ebay, most likely the “powersellers” What are they doing, how are they doing it and should you copy or just Do It Better! Before you invest any money, see what the other sellers in your category are up to, and what their strategies are. Pay special attention to any flaws their auctions might have, because this is where you can move in and beat them at their own game. Do it better and the customers will come your way.

Step 3: Well of course…Find a product: Get hold of a supplier for whatever it is you want to sell, and see what the best rates you can get are – don’t be afraid to ring round quite a few to get the best deal. Do your homework and do not settle for just any product or supplier because it is easy. Most likely if the supplier was eager and easy to find, the ebay market is already flooded with that product. be as unique and original as possible to distance yourself from the rest of the pack. If the eBay prices you’ve seen are higher than the supplier’s, then you’re set.

Step 4: Start small, thats right, small. do not try to open a shopping mall. do not try to service a mass market. let the “Powersellers” and established sellers handle that. Start with something small and manageable, you will not be disappointed. Don’t throw thousands at your idea straight away – get started slowly, see what works and what doesn’t, and learn as you go. Remember that it’s very cheap to try out even the craziest ideas on eBay, and who knows, they might just work! Plan your work and work your plan.

Step 5: Test your ideas and repeat. test again and repeat again. Keep trying different strategies until you find something that works, and then don’t be ashamed to keep doing it, again and again. Do not give up, do not get disappointed, do not expect instant success. Work your plan and stay focused and your plan will come together…sooner than you think. When it starts to click, then chances are that you’ve just found a good niche.

Step 6: Work out a business plan, as I mentiuoned above…Plan your work and work your plan. Working or starting a work at home career, or a career selling on ebay still requires a business plan. A business plan doesn’t need to be anything formal, just a few pages that outline the market opportunity you’ve spotted, your strategy, strengths and weaknesses of the plan and a brief budget. This is more for you than it is for anyone else. Put it on paper and chances are you will achieve things much quicker.

Step 7: Invest your earnings into your business and expand slowly and when the time is right. There is no time to throw money at any problem. Do not buy inventory, and start spending more money on your business. Instead invest your time and efforts to grow , expand and solve any problems. This is not get rich quick or easy…it takes planning and execution of your plan. Set a goal number of sales each week, increasing it each time.

Step 8: Make it official: Once you’ve made a few thousand dollars worth of sales, you should really register yourself as a business. Get yourself an LLC and register in the state you live and do business. you will look more professional to your customers or any potential customers. Don’t worry, it’s not expensive or hard to do – while a lawyer is the best person to help you through the process, it is most likely not needed.

Step 9: Automate: You’ll probably find that you’re writing the same things again and again in emails or item descriptions. This is the time to give up on the manual method and turn to automated software that can create listings for you, and respond to completed auctions and payments with whatever message you provide. There are many tools at your disposal to automate most of the processes, be sure to use them.

Step 10: Never, ever give up. This requires work and dedication on your part. Even when it looks like it’s all going wrong, don’t stop trying until you succeed. If you keep working at it then you’ll almost always find that you make a real breakthrough just when things are starting to look desperate. Plan your work, work your plan and stick to it. Your efforts will not go to waste if you stay focused on what you need to be doing. Do not wait for it to be done for you…do it yourself!
